Children: Young Carers

Young Carers
Young Carers are children and young people, up to the age of 18, whose lives are affected by looking after someone. This may include physical or learning disabilities, long term illness, mental health illness, or drug or alcohol challenges. This may be a parent, brother, sister or other family member. Read more
Award Ceremony extraordinaire! - Autumn 21 - VIDEO NOW ADDED
6 of Holy Family's year 6 Young Carers were invited to the Village hotel in Swindon to celebrate their achievements over the year.
These children have been involved in completing AQA units such as Dance, Graffiti Art and Muffin making and have received professional certificates to mark these achievements. 4 of our Young Carers have gone on to secondary school now so unfortunately missed out on this ceremony. We will be contacting their families separately to congratulate them.

The children were treated to a meal, a handmade mosaic award, a pencil case saying that 'Not all superheroes wear capes' (referring to their role in taking care of their loved ones) and much more more. One child told us it was "my best day EVER" and the looks on their faces when they saw the tables decked out with cordial (they thought was wine!) helium balloons and Heroes chocolates was a picture. Talking of pictures- please check out those below.

Our children were personally congratulated by the Chief Executive of Swindon Young Carers who joined our table and due to the exuberance and sparkle the children showed, the CEO asked them if they would like to perform a dance to start of the 'show'! They took to this like ducks to water and had the audience up and clapping. View their amazing video here.
It was an afternoon to remember.

The 4 Young Carers in the younger group will begin their AQA units this month too so may be celebrating similarly soon too!
There will be a Young Carers awareness raising assembly next Friday (24th) Your child may come home and talk about it with you. If you feel that your child may be a Young Carer (a child under the age of 18 who has responsibilities above and beyond those of a child of a similar age and who looks after someone they live with (or see very often) with a visible or invisible disability)
The care Young Carers give maybe physical and /or emotional. These responsibilities may include:
  • Personal care
  • Housework
  • Lifting
  • Shopping
  • Giving Medication
  • Looking after brothers or sisters
  • Cheering them up
  • Helping fill in forms
  • Reminding them to do things

At Holy Family Primary, we want Young Carers to be recognised, feel supported and know they have someone to speak to if they need help. We also have a Young Carers Policy.

If you feel your child may be a Young Carer please let us know so that we can help. The support that may be offered depends on the need but could include:
  • Telephone, text or e-mail support
  • Time out, away from home with a Young Carers Support Worker
  • Activities in small groups during school holidays
  • Short breaks and residential trips
  • Weekly/fortnightly groups mixing with other young carers of the same age.
  • Referral to other projects or groups
  • Possible funding for individual activities
